Today's Sepia Saturday theme is 'Theatre', so I thought this picture (one of my many, growing collection of signed actress pictures from the early 20th Century) was perfect. Janette Steer was a Victorian actress who moved to London from the United States in 1893. She was well known for playing Hamlet and for being a militant feminist and suffragette- she was a close friend of the Pankhurst family and socialised with many of the suffragette actresses such as Ellen Terry. Interesting lady!
She looks as though she could hold her own anywhere...
ReplyDeleteGreat photo! The leaning pose on what looks like an archbishop's chair, adds a sense of movement that perhaps would not be in a non-theatrical photo.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, and thank you for enlightening me about this forward thinking actress. I wasn't aware of the activism among actresses of that era.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Linda on the activism of the women of that era. I have never heard of this one. Great information and beautiful portrait.
